Base oils are the backbone of lubricants. Therefore, it is important to know the pro's and con's of the different base oil types and where to use the one or better the other base oil type. In addition, the principle of additive technology is crucial to understand, how base oil and additives collaborate successsfull. In practice, questions about intermixing (compatibility) cannot be answered without knowledge about the fundamentals of base oils and lubricant additives.

It contains the following videos:

  • Base oils - Introduction and overview
    Video length: 16:11 Minutes
Target: To learn about the general composition of mineral oils and their limitations. In comparison to mineral oils an approach to synthetic base stocks is given. Learn to know the most important base stock types, which are explained in the further chapters of this video training.

  • Part I: From mineral oils to synthetic hydrocarbons
    Video length: 21:35 Minutes
Target: To learn about the different composition and properties of mineral oils after different levels of hydrogen treatment (API group I to III) and fully synthetic hydrocarbons (PAO). To become familiar where this base oil types should be used or not.

  • Part II: Esters, polyglycols & others
    Video length: 18:26 Minutes
Target: To learn about the general composition of esters, polyglycols, silicones and PFPE fluids. In comparison to mineral oils an approach to this synthetic base stocks is given and where they should be used or not.

  • Why water and oil do not mix
    Video length: 6:46 Minutes
Target: To learn about the general meaning of polarity in the field of mixability and compatibility discussions.
In addition to the videos, you can download the used presentations as PDF files.
